I'm Amy Dunlap,
a certified dog trainer with over 10 years of experience helping families build better relationships with their dogs. My approach uses positive, reward-based techniques that are customized to every dog. I'll help teach you what your dog is communicating, show you why they're doing what they do, then show you how to teach a new, desired behavior in the place of the problem behavior. I'll also help you find appropriate tools and home management techniques to stop problem behaviors from returning.

What our clients think...
"Amy at Ruff Start Dog Training is knowledgeable, kind, and absolutely wonderful. She empowers you and teaches you how to help your furry baby by showing you how to read their physical cues as well as reward based training.
I cannot say enough about how lucky we are to have found her. Our German Shepherd/Corgi baby is happier and less destructive since she has been helping us with training him!"

FAQs
- What kinds of dogs are these classes for?
Our classes are great for friendly dogs of all breeds, sizes, and ages (12 weeks and up). We offer multiple levels- whether you're starting from scratch or building on existing skills, we've got a class for you.
- My dog is really excitable/reactive/shy- Can we still join?
Possibly. Mild reactivity, nervousness, or overexcitement is common and we can help with that. It's best to call Amy at (219)314-1874 to discuss your dog's needs. Generally, your dog needs to be able to be within 20 feet of another dog and still focus on treats.
- How many dogs are in each class?
We keep classes small. Generally, we can have anywhere from 2-5 dogs in a class. This gives you plenty of personal attention and room to train.
- What should I bring to class?
You'll need a flat collar or harness (I love 2Hounds' Freedom Harness with leash), a 6 foot leash (No retractables), at least 150 high-value treats (2 different kinds), and a treat pouch (Optional). If your dog prefers toys over treats, you can also bring a high value toy.
- Can more than one person come to class with the dog?
Yes! We encourage families to learn together. One adult must be the primary handler, but any kids under 7 must have an adult present to watch them during class, and they're welcome to participate during class.
- What if it rains or the weather is bad?
We train rain or shine when it's safe. In the case of rain or extreme heat, we will hold classes in Amy's basement. If there is more severe weather, we will notify you ASAP if class is postponed and reschedule accordingly.
- What if I miss class?
Life happens! Let us know as soon as possible and we'll do our best to offer a makeup session or give you homework to stay caught up.
- Are vaccines required to attend class?
